Did he at least offer to return your boxes and the contents? I'd be sick at
heart if my stamps were stolen...

Yes, the "Audubon guy" was very nice about returning our boxes (and we
even got to find out about a missing hitcher in the process!). He
kindly suggested other spots to plant boxes, and even said his wife
may be interested in taking up our little hobby. So, yes, good will
is very important. It may be unfortunate that someone else "blew our
cover", but at least now we know the policy. Sometimes asking
permission first works better and sometimes it doesn't, but let's all
try to be gracious and careful about placing boxes, if we can!
